Today I’m going to show you how to use one of my favorite editing tools Hemingway editor. Hemingway Editor is a free online editing tool that looks at a piece of writing to see how readable it is. Is it a piece of writing that is clear and easy to understand, or is it a piece of writing that is is challenging and hard to read? So it’s going to take your writing and it’s going to pinpoint things that you can change in order to make your writing more clear powerful and effective overall. So let’s take a look at how to use Hemingway Editor.
Okay so Hemingway editor, it’s also called Hemingway app, it’s at the website www.hemingwayapp.com. You’ll see here that this is an example text that shows you how to use Hemingway. So the first thing I want to point out is this readability score. Now the readability refers to the level of education a person needs to be at in order to understand a piece of writing. And good writing isn’t hard to read. You actually don’t want a really high grade level for Hemingway. It says that a grade level of 9 or below is good.
In a lot of other places they will tell you that the average person reads at a grade level of 8. I tend to try and make my readability scores between 6 & 8. Now it’s color-coded to show you the different elements it analyzes in blue it’s going to show you adverbs in green it’s going to show you the use of passive voice. So an example of passive voice would be the sentence, “The essays are graded” compared to an example of active voice which is a sentence like, “The teacher graded the essays.” In active voice you see that the subject the teacher is actually doing.
In this action she graded the essays, and in writing we try and limit passive voice and focus more on active voice because it’s stronger in writing. In purple it shows you phrases that have a simpler alternative. In what looks like peach h to me but Hemingway app calls it yellow, it points out sentences that are hard to read and then in what looks like lavender to me Hemingway actually calls this red it shows you sentences that are very hard to read. So let’s look at the example text here. It says, “The app highlights lengthy complex sentences and common errors if you see a yellow sentence shorten or split it.” So one of the things that you could do if you wanted to revise this sentence is just take out the semicolon and split it into two. Alright in this highlighted sentence which is supposed to be red it’s showing you that this is a very hard to read sentence. So let’s look at that. “If you see a red highlight your sentence is so dense and complicated that your readers will get lost trying to follow it’s meandering splitting logic try editing this sentence to remove the red.” So here I would probably take that meaning and I would restructure this sentence. Actually I would probably write it in two sentences. Iin purple it shows you that there’s a simpler word so you could change utilize to use. In blue here it shows you adverbs.
So let’s just look at this one sentence, “Get rid of them and pick words with force, perhaps.” Perhaps weakens that sentence so if we just take it away the sentence reads, “Get rid of them and pick words with force. That’s a much stronger sentence and then in green here it shows you passive voice. So let’s take a look at a piece of writing I have now I haven’t done anything to the text so this probably will need a lot of editing. You’ll see here that my readability score is grade 9, and I have one adverb.I have two phrases that are simpler alternatives.
Two of my sentences are hard to read but none of my sentences are very hard to read. So I’m going to look at this first sentence here in yellow, “I tutor academic writing online because I love teaching English and writing to students who want to excel in school in college.” Well I think I’m going to change the beginning of this sentence. An easy way to fix it would have been to just split the two sentences, but I want to change the meaning a little. “I am an online academic writing tutor.” and then I’m going to change this. Get rid of the word “because” “I love teaching English and writing to students who want to excel in school in college.” Okay so my text continues on and then here I see in in purple that I have a word that I could change. I could change it to also, besides or too. Then I have the whole sentence in yellow.
So let me read it all before I just change this. “In addition to tutoring sessions, I have a weekly question-and-answer meeting so students can ask me questions about writing and studying.” Alright I think that sentence I’m actually going to get rid of the entire first clause because I don’t think I need that. And I’m going to change instead of “a weekly question-and-answer meeting” I don’t like that question is repeated. I’m going to take away the article a and I’m going to say, “I have weekly office hours” that has the same meaning and then that works. So, “I have weekly office hours so students can ask me questions about writing and studying.” Here in blue I have an adverb so the sentence is, They clearly demonstrate different aspects of writing and reading for college. I’m going to get rid of clearly and demonstrate I could make that a simpler word and Hemingway app shows me some things that I could choose. I think I’m going to change it to show because that’s closest to the meaning. “They show different aspects of writing and reading for college.”
Alright and now my readability score has changed to grade 7. So what I would do next is I would copy and I would paste this right into my own document and that’s how you use Hemingway Editor. So go ahead and try this with your next piece of writing. it works great for essays, papers fiction, blog posts. If you’re a blogger I really recommend Hemingway.
